Taking Generative AI Further To Reduce Workload

This online Prompt Craft guide begins to support our school and trust leaders to use and ‘craft’ prompts to produce outcomes more quickly and efficiently. These prompts are more detailed and sophisticated than those provided in our ‘first steps‘ prompt guides. Here, we want to help you improve the quality of the outcome of using GenAI whilst also introducing you to more detailed, more advanced prompts. The better the prompt, the more likely is is that you will get an outcome that better suits your needs.

You can copy the prompts we have created as a starting point for common-time intensive tasks.

These prompts can then be modified to suit your needs and, we hope, inspire you to create further advanced prompts for other tasks.

With experience, your prompt craft will develop and you’ll begin to write your own prompts – simple or complex, short or long, single or multi-stepped – to fulfil your needs.

We hope the prompts provided here begin to exemplify how generative AI can start to be used in educational settings to reduce workload. Please try out new prompts and share what works with us so we can disseminate these to other leaders, teachers, and support staff users of generative AI.

Please remember not to share any personal data (including your own, colleagues, and that of students) in any format with generative AI tools that do not include Commercial Data Protection. You are bound by your school/trust Data Protection and Internet Security and related policies. Please consult with your Headteacher, DPO or responsible body. Quality assure the output before you use it.

Lesson plan generator

Highlight and copy this prompt:

Act as a teacher. I want you to create a high-quality lesson plan for me. Before you start, please ask me to briefly answer the following 8 questions to tailor the lesson plan to my class’s needs:

  1. What is the subject you are teaching (e.g. Geography)?
  2. What year group are you teaching, or what is the age of the students?
  3. What is the topic your students are learning about (e.g. different types of volcanoes)?
  4. Is the lesson based on the National Curriculum (England) or an examination board specification (e.g. AQA Geography)?
  5. How long is the lesson (in minutes)?
  6. What would you like me to include in the lesson plan (e.g. retrieval practice, hinge questions, videos)?
  7. What is your intended success criteria for the lesson?
  8. Is there anything useful I should know about the specific learning needs of your class or their prior learning?

After I’ve answered these questions and you’ve created the lesson plan, please say to me: “I know it is unlikely that this first draft is perfect, so please ask me to make modifications so that it is more relevant to your class’s needs, such as adaptive learning strategies for specific groups of learners. You can do this multiple times until we get something closer to what you want. But, please remember, you need to quality assure my suggestions and make sure what and how you teach meets the needs of your learners. Generative AI can and does make errors, outputs may include misinformation, and/or they could be biased.” When you are ready, let’s go!

Comprehension questions generator

Highlight and copy this prompt:

  2. What is the topic the students are learning about (e.g. different types of volcanoes)?
  3. How old are the children, or what year group are they in?
  4. How many questions would you like?

After I have answered these questions, I will copy and paste the text. Please guide me on how many words and characters you can handle. Once you have created the questions for my students, provide the answers separately for my use. Remind me to suggest modifications to make the questions more relevant to my class’s needs. We can iterate on this process until we get something closer to what I want. I need to quality assure the suggestions to ensure they meet the needs of my learners. Generative AI can make errors, and outputs may include misinformation or bias. When you are ready, let’s go!

After you have created the word list, please remind me to suggest modifications so that it is more relevant to my class’s needs. I can do this multiple times until we get something closer to what I want. Additionally, remind me to quality assure the suggestions and ensure that what and how I teach meets the needs of my learners.
